The just-get-hot answer is probably true for regular old alkali 9 volt transistor radio batteries. However be careful. Higher performance Lithium batteries or larger lead acid batteries could explode after a few seconds. That would bad because they contain toxic and/or corrosive chemicals. Also, if the connection is made with a wire, the wire will get hot and *it* may explode into a hot flash of molten metal.
