My laptop starting making weird noises, and now it says it doesn't recognize the hard drive. Does that mean I have lost all of my data? I know I could replace the hard drive, but is there any way to recover my files?

Chances are you may have pretty much lost your data if the problem is your hard drive. It does sound as if it may be the problem, but you'll have to try the laptop with a new Hd first in order to find out.
If you have another laptop HD then take out the old one & see if the 2nd one works with the laptop. If it doesn't,then it may be a connecter on the mobo or your cpu .If it does start up fine, then it most likely is the old HD.
You can try & get the data by getting one of the small external HD's that are at the stores-carefully disasemble the caseing not the HD-& take out the HD in it(it's a laptop HD if you don't have a new one)put the new one in your laptop-see if it works. If it does then download your OS of choice onto the new one.
Then carefully put your old HD into the external caseing, Plug the old HD in the caseing into the laptop or into your desktop pc to see if it works orto see if you can see the data on it .
If you can, then copy the info back onto your new hd & there you go.
If you can't see any info then it's gone.Good luck!

There a re a lot of programs that recover lost passwords on your computer. Only small apps but they will find any passwords logins etc. that you may have lost or forgotten. If this doesnt work then copy the files to an external hard drive then move the info from there to your new computer. If it is a small file then a flash drive will do. Sab

There is a simple resolution to your problem. Ok, lets assume the worst that your hard drive is not bootable. The answer to your problem is an "External USB 2.0 Hard Drive Enclosure". I have posted a link to one on Best Buys web site for reference. With an encloure all you have to do is install the drive in the enclosure, which is very easy to do, and plug it into any usb 1.1/2.0 slot on any PC and pull off your data. If you wanted you could even format it to save a few extra step when reinstalling Windows. I purchased one of these a few years ago. For the price you can't beat it.

Yes, indeed yes. Why not? Of course you can do data recovery. You can go to this website and download GetDataBack. There are 2 version available depend on what type files system you are using either NTFS or FAT32. Ok, have fun. Go to this website to download that particular software.
