Banning it would only give the word more power. Just like several of the other "un-mentionable words" it should not be used at all. Except in the context of a movie perhaps, signifying the intolerance of the old south for example. I would have no problem with certain uses depending on context.
I think the major problem with the word is any glorification of it.
In cases such as Micheal Richards, as a news item it should not be beeped out. Play it. It only emphasizes how use of the word is something born of stupidity. Simply "protecting the masses" from distasteful things only adds a misplaced mystique to those distasteful things.

But with that, I think it just as bad when African Americans refer to themselves with a version of the word that ends in "ga". Let's be honest, the root of that word is the one that ends in "ger". People should strive to pull themselves up and forward, not wallow in the past.

wrong! as soon as you start censoring words whether good or bad, it's the start of the loss of our freedom . free speech is as important as any of our rights. don't let the government start telling us what we can and can't hear, or what we can or can't watch. then whats next? your right to bear arms, ect... Also, black people say the "N" word all the time, but as soon as one white man says it publicly it's all of a sudden a major issue! that is the very definition of hypocrisy.

Eh, it doesn't bother me. Besides, there's a difference between being black and being the 'N' word.
