Most trips start in Taipei. One of the first things most people visit there is Taipei 101 (currentlyt the tallest building in the world). Honestly, it's a bit overated, but I guess it's fun to tell others you've been there. Definately check out the National Palace Musuem, though. It's considered the finest collection of Chinese art in the world. From there, go to Shilin night market, the biggest in the city. I recommend the local spring rolls while there. They're delicious. There are also tons of temples; some of the more interesting ones are not so famous, so bring a good pair of shoes and explore a bit.
Outside of Taipei, the 2 tops attractions would be Tarako Gorge, near Hualien on the west coast; and Sun Moon Lake in the center of the island.
Enjoy your trip.

Taiwan's tourism industry is not developed like Hawaii's. However, if you're interested in seeing a modern country that is very open and accepting, Taiwan is a great place to visit.
Taipei is a top destination for tourists, with hundreds of shops, museums, parks, and other fun things to do. Two of the newest sights are Taipei 101 (currently the world's tallest building) and the Mirimar Mall (featuring Asia's largest Ferris wheel). There are so many things to do in Taipei, and everything is easily accessible by the MRT (metro rail system). It's really convenient, and there are many free events held in Taipei. http://english.taipei.gov.tw/TCG/index.jsp
There are many mountains in Taiwan, and they offer a great opportunity to see. The scenery is really beautiful and green. It's easy to get around Taiwan with all the trains and buses, and you can rent a motor scooter for about US$5 a day for local travel. http://www.go2taiwan.net/monthly_selection.php?date=2006-09&PHPSESSID=a57deafa55270232314286beb186a3bb
A great tradition in Taiwan is that of the night markets. At night, all around Taiwan, there are places that open up to sell food and merchandise. http://www.go2taiwan.net/monthly_selection.php?date=2006-11&PHPSESSID=a57deafa55270232314286beb186a3bb
There are many other things to see in Taiwan, like the many temples. http://www.taiwantourism.org/News_events.htm
Taiwan is nice all year round. It's on the Tropic of Cancer, so the weather is warm. I'd suggest you don't come to Taiwan during Chinese New Year's, (this year it's Feb 17- 28) because everyone will stay at home and many things will be closed. So come to Taiwan any other time, and you'll have a great time!

1. National Palace Museum.
(CKS took everything from China when he fled. It's all here. The only things left in China are the buildings.)
2. Night Markets, esp. in Shilin or Keelung
(Shilin smells like dog crap a lot of the time. Keelung has a lot of smokers)
3. CKS Memorial Temple or Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Temple
4. Outside the Presidential Building, join the protestors :)
5. Yangming Mountains. Beautiful.
6. Hualien. The most beautiful city in Taiwan.
