Blood vessels (veins, capillaries, and arteries) are themselves made up of living cells. For example, the linings of arteries and veins are made up of a sheet of endothelial cells. Arteries have muscle cells in their walls. Capillaries are only one cell thick, and allow red blood cells to pass in single-file so that they can most efficiently exchange oxygen for CO2.
