Relatively high-quality art materials aren't particularly difficult to find, if you look in the right places (specialist stores, etc.). You could also look here:http://www.gorm.co.uk/Art-Materials.html Still, if your friend is really critical it might be best to just get her a book about art, like "How to draw nudes", or maybe a biography of an artist you know she admires. Or you could simply give her a gift card or a wad of cash, and let her buy whatever she wants herself, although she might regard that as being a little unimaginative. Perhaps you should just ask her.

If she's "critical" then you should buy the best products you can afford. If you can't afford to get the best, get her something little and add a gift certificate from the local art supplies store so she can choose what she needs/wants herself.

If you don't know what she already has or uses, that could be a problem too. She may feel bad about returning something she doesn't need or wouldn't use.

Everyone in my family is afraid to buy me art supplies for the same reason - but I love to go wild (with someone else's money!) getting something I wouldn't normally buy for myself.

Maybe go another direction ~ giving the tools of the craft can be terribly tricky.
I think I might find a book with drawings by artists or a bio on Picasso or MOMA. Or even an accessory -- a carry bag, a portable stool, a clever umbrella - that sort of thing.

You are so sweet. Years ago, I bought my best friend some colored ink and drawing pens. At the time, they were very expensive for me to buy, but I knew that it was something that she would use and enjoy. I think that is my favorite Christmas memory. Buy quality over quantity and you can't go wrong. Your friend is very lucky.

I vote for the gift certificate so your friend can pick out what she needs or wants the most. Just find out her favorite source for supplies and go from there.

What a thoughtful and considerate friend you are!

Best bet: gift certificate to her favorite art store, online or otherwise.

try to give her magazines or books about art and crafts because if she likes to draw, her mind must be creative and full of ideas
