They're reaching the age where independence is more important to them. How about a gift card to a local mall or favorite store, and they can pick out what they want? Or if they have an Ipod, you can get a gift card that lets them download music that they like.

Gift Cards kids love money and the responsiblity of buying for themselves. If you could go around the hundred dollar range, the Nintendo DS is IN this year. That is what my son has asked for (he's 12 close age group)

girls love jewelry (claire's is great and cheap), clothes ( u can't go wrong with a pair of cute jeans), shoes (flats are really popular now). u can also just get an american express gift card (they can shop anywhere they want) or put the reciets with the gift.
guys like video games,cool sneakers ( vans, converse, nikes or jordans depending what they like)
both would love music (ipods or cd's), dvd's, or just plain ol' cash

What do you think is too expensive ? You could buy them Ipods , video games , or if they are all from the same familly buy them an x-box 360 or a game like that for all of them.

the high school musical dvd?
if she's a girly-girl then u can't go wrong with funky diaries or scrapbooks. maybe cds or even light scents (i.e. like perfumes but lighter).
for a boy maybe comics if he's into them or sports merchandise of a team he supports.
you can get the sports merchandise for the girl too if she's into a certain team.

I think shoes are good answers. Guys like skateboarding shoes even if they don't like to skateboard. And girls like any kind of shoes just to walk around and show off in. You can get some really nice shoes for a good price.

Board games (mad gab, uno attack, cranium, etc.) or dvds. Also you can get small cameras for cheap prices. If all else fails...gift cards
