If someone gives you a Christmas gift, who was not on your gift list, would you feel compelled to get that person a gift in return? If so, why? If not, why not?

It's funny you asked this because this just happened to me yesterday and the person told me to not feel compelled to buy her a gift in return. I'm not going to get her anything but I may take her dinner or something like that.

I think we feel it's necessary to give a person a gift if we've received one because that's how we've been programmed. manners dictate that's what we do and that's what the other person expects, but if they gave a gift because it pleases them to do so, then they will be okay if you don't reciprocate.

yes i would first off i would feel terribly bad because i didnt get them one i would try to give them atleast a box of chocolate or something maybe even a thankyou card with a little extra cash or gift card inside. It is just the honorable thing to do because they went out there way and time and actually thought of you(because often people complain no one cares about them)while trying to get a gift! It is just the right thing to do i dont know how much more i can sugesst that

The over all question was. What was it about this person that he or she did not make it on your gift list? Then what is it about you that made it on there christmas list? Is this a person to build a friendship with? To answer your question is if you want to make a better friend then the answer would be yes out of respect.

I try to make it a point to have gifts for people that I think might give me one. I feel that you give gifts to those who are special to you and if someone GIVES you one, they feel you are special to them. So, as to not give the message "you're NOT that important to me," I always get a couple of extra "just in case (so and so gets me a gift)" gifts. It's always something that's nongender based, that I'd like for myself. This way, if they don't give me a gift, I can keep it and it wasn't a waste!
Ahh the joys of the Christmas gift giving game... don't ya just LOVE IT!?

I probably wouldn't get them a Christmas gift because I already had all of mine planned out, plus it would look like it was an afterthought. What I would do is write them a thankyou note if I felt guilty, and buy them a birthday present when it rolls around.

Unless of course, it's someone I'm trying to make distance with. Then I just wouldn't! :-P

yes i would get them a gift just to be polite. I'd feel rude not giving them something in return. Besides Christmas is all about the GIVING rite...

I would because it is better to give than receive and you should be thankful they thought about you so yes you should give them a gift in return

Many shops in simple terms enable for exchanges for products bought throughout December. If the keep you purchased the DVD set would not have that coverage you'll be waiting to get your money refunded.

i used to feel really bad about situation like this but not as much anymore because i realized that it is more awkward to say, oh, i have yours at home or i forgot yours then it is to just be really appreciative and thank them for thinking about you. just brag on them about how sweet and caring they are. to me that works out much better.

i will definitely send a thank you note and normally something like homemade cookies if i see them often as a thank you for the thoughtfulness after christmas.

take care! Sd
