Which is the best pilot movie Top Gun or Flight of the Intruder? How can this be measured? Cast? Overall acting? Or Storyline?
1. If you havent seen flight of the intruder you wouldnt know.
2. Tom Cruise's loss of marbles should be considered.
3. Flight of the Navigator is not even close to the same category of movie.

Flight of the Intruder has a better storyline and better acting. The main characters were immersed in conflict (The Vietnam War) and became "heroes" in the traditional war movie format, by taking on the enemy and proving victorious in the heat of combat. Though it did not have the dogfight action of Top Gun the story was much better. Pilots facing the perils of war, forced to suffer loses because of political bureaucracy preventing them from attacking real targets and their dilemma to disobey orders.
Top Gun in comparison did have better action with the dogfight scenes, but the storyline was weak (Competitive pilot training and a random encounter with Migs) and the character's weren't as developed. The heavy emphasis on action sequences made character development scenes rather short and/or superficial. Though many actors in the move had decent skills, they came across as weak performances because the movie did not allow for character-based scenes that would provided real character development.
So the better movie in this case would be Flight of the Intruder.

I like Top Gun......Tom Cruise before he lost his marbles.
The ratings on IMDB are:
Top Gun: 6.5 out of 10
Flight Of The Intruder: 5.2 out of 10
So it seems like fans of the Internet Movie Data Base prefer Top Gun.

Top gun is my favorite, but there is Fly Boys and Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag

i think Top Gun
I think this because it attracted both audiences
the viewers that like action films and those that like romantic films. It also was a comedy in some since, with the character of goose.
plus having Tom Cruise and Kelly McGuillis(sp?) in a movie together back then was a plus.
