when one writes it can be worthless drivel or it can be so well done that it becomes an art form... there are those who think that just the act of writing is art and maybe it is just not good art. Attaining a level of greatness in lit as art is worth the attempt but the results vary a great deal.... the imitation can be one of two things. You imitate life in what you write because words are not reality. They only express someones opinion on that reality so are therefore imitation. The expression art imitates life means that the practice of these arts is an imitating of the life that the artist leads. for instance I can not paint like the 17th century painter because I am not from that century, not quite that old yet. So if I paint in that style I am merely imitating something from that era. I would still be painting in my own time because I can not get out of that time therefore whatever I do is imitation.

literature is an art because it test your skills to bring to life the words you read or act out it also stands in the capacity of an imitaion because it is a renactment of what was the realness of it can be questioned; how ever both put together makes literature simply captivating and almost timeless.
