The Zimmerman Telegram was a communique sent by the Imperial German Government to it's envoy in Mexico proposing that Mexico declare war on the United States, and promising return of the territory Mexico ceded after the Mexican War (if The Triple Alliance plus Mexico were victorious). The telegram was intercepted and was one of the most influential factors in causing the American entry int World War I.

While you have to look it up...

During WW I, the Imperial German government (apparently) offered a deal to Mexico for getting back the Southwest (which they lost in the Mexican War) in exchange for alliance against the United States. That deal was outlined in an intercepted telegram - the "Zimmerman Telegram."

Of course, the **** hit the fan - and splattered!

Arthur Zimmerman was the Foreign Minister of German Empire and during WWI he sent a telegram to Mexico stating that if they would join the Central Powers (Germany, Ausria, Hungary) in the war, they would give them back New Mexico, Arizona, California and Texas. The telelgraph was intercepted by the Brittish who brought it to the attention of the American President. (Woodrow Wilson) who was furious and declared war. Google it to make sure that's all the info you need.

It was a bit of insanity, considering that it was sent over BRITISH telegraph lines suggesting that Mexico regain its lost possesions in the American southwest by joining the Central Powers in WW I.
