Formal Training(college): 0-6, BFA for 4 years, and an MFA if you want
Studio Classes: the rest of your life(even Pacino and De Niro still do these)
To address the comment about being discovered, there is no such thing, all you can do is get training, submit plenty of resumes and headshots, network, audition, and work when you get a part. If you ever get a starring role, you should shell out the $2000-$4000 for a publicist, as they will help build celebrity. Save up money while in college if you go, and if you dont, try to save up about $10,000............that will be enough to get you started for a few months in Los Angeles or New York, though you will need a survival job. For stage this means a day job, and for film and tv a night job. Just be yourself and find your own path and you should be fine. Also, dont hire the first photographer, and dont get in a hurry to spend alot of money, I would reccomend you read Promoting Your Acting Career, 2nd Edition, By Glenn Alterman. The sections on Training and the interviews with casting directors were very helpful for me. Just so you know the top college drama programs in the United States are Juilliard, New York University, State University of New York(SUNY)-Purchase College, Boston University, Carnegie Mellon University, Rutgers University, and North Carolina School of the Arts. Purchase and NC School of the Arts are least expensive since they are public colleges, and the deadline for fall 2007 admission for Juilliard was Dec. 1
The other schools are almost as highly regarded as Juilliard though, so it all depends on how long you want to way, and just be sure this is really what you want to do with your life before you commit the time to it, since it can be a heart break most of the time.

You do not need to go to college to become an actress. But, if you want to take acting classes, that can be done in Los Angeles or New York or maybe another place near you. It takes dedication to become an actress and it takes a lot of money. You need to be patient as well. If you go to college, I suggest you follow another dream of yours just in case acting does not work out for you. While you are in college you can perhaps take theatre.

All the answers are interesting. I'd say 4 years too but also have something else that interests you that you can do while waiting to become an actor. Go to a colege that is not just for theatre so you get a broader background-education wise, and people wise. Our daughter is applying to regular colleges/universities with a good theatre program but also is going to take regular courses and probably a mior in something else. The schools with a GOOD theatre program have very competative auditioning standards and are difficult to get into. Go for it anyway, you never know. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Technically you need none. It's all about having the drive and the will power to get there. It's good to go to college because it will help you latter in life. But make sure that you know the difference between being a successful actor and being famous...if your in this to be famous--go to college. Because you'll need a back up plan. If you want to be an actor because you love acting and it's your passion--go after it. You'll get there. Remember don't have a fall back because if you do, you'll fall back.

that all depends... some actresses never went to school for it at all ....others like Jody Foster have separate degrees having nothing to do with acting. If you are smart you will get a degree in something that you really have an interest in beside acting so that if acting doesn't work you still have a workable education while you are getting this four year degree minor in theater and go for it what is your stage name going to be? so we can watch for you

Well, there's no real answer. I definitely recommend taking acting classes, and if you got a degree (4 years) that can only help you. However, there are many actors who have never taken any classes. It depends on talent and sometimes on who you know. My advice is to audition, audition, audition, and do as much acting as you can. Lots of experience can only help you. Break a Leg!

you can start anytime you want.
dont listen to other ppl telling you to go to school and finish up first. if you want to start at an early age, you go do auditions and stuff.
that crap about school is just something to fall back on.
