I'm buying the Shining DVD, based on Stephen King's Novel. There are two editions, the 1997 edition, starring : Steven Weber, Rebecca De Mornay

Or, the 1980 edition, starring: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall

I'm just wondering, which one is better?

The first one was great - still love it. The second one was good, went from the book a lot more but ya just can't beat Jack Nicholson.

1980 Of course, but not just becuase it is a classic and most people love the original. Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall were amazing. Jack really embodied a total psycho and Shelley was great at reacting and being terrified. Steven and Rebecca are good actors, but they didn't do as good a job and Jack and Shelley. Plus the first version seems better made and more suspenseful (creepy music and a kind of realistic-supernatural feel) the re-make is filled with hollywood glitter and dull effects.

I haven't seen yet, a remake of an original movie that is 'better.'
Several attempts have been made but none have been 'better.'
Let's name a few, The Flight of the Phoenix, Village of the Damned, House on Haunted Hill, King Kong just to name a few.
Nobody can replace or replicate a role played by Jack Nicholson, there's no sense in even trying, the 1980's original is best.

Kubrick's 1980 version doesn't fully adhere to the novel like the 1997 version does, but it's truly a creepy film and worth buying. The mood and slow-building tension emulates the isolation and cabin fever experienced by the characters. Surrealistic terror sequences leave you unsettled and left to wonder just what is going on.

However, I highly recommend that you watch the Kubrick film and then read King's novel. Do it in that order so you don't hold the plot deviations again the Kubrick movie.

HI LUCIFER,
the original " THE SHINING " starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall was definately the better version. And my favorite scene in this movie is when jack was using the axe to come thru the door while saying. " HEEEEERRRREEEEESSSSSS JOHNNY!!!! " Totally awesome, in my opinion !!!!!!!!!!

By far the 1980 version, it is one of the freakiest movies to date still, and plus it put Jack Nicholson on the map.

The second one follows the story more, it really does, so if you like accuracy towards the novel, that one's better. But I love Jack Nicholson. I really do. So I myself rather like the first one, despite Kubrick's weirdness he put in.

Stanley Kubricks version is much better...I think it is better than Stephen Kings original version...Kubrick was the master of surreal and quiet creepiness and his films all have this wierd, cold stark feel to them. He was a genius...his version will always be the best!

1980, the originals are usually better, and Jack Nicholason owned that part.
