when i go to start off, my rev counter goes up to 4 i change into second gear and the car is still over reving to 4 and its going no where and i start to smell a burning smell whilst its over reving. It just started to happen. I can't go up hill more than 10mph

check your fluid reservore for the clutch slave cylinder. bet u didn't u had one. it's next to the brake master cylnder.u probably burne dup ur clutch, friend

If it is overrevving and is also overheating, then it could be an exhaust problem, like a stopped up catalytic converter or muffler. I had this problem with a manual shift pickup truck and the symptoms were exactly as described. You can check this out yourself, just loosen and detach the catalytic converter. You do not have to take it all of the way off, just loosen enough that it can no longer restrict the flow of exhaust. Then you start your car, and drive and see if it helps. I did this on the side of the highway on the way to trade mine in, and it fixed it, good enough to trade it in with no problems. It could also be that your engine is about to go (problems with the pistons/block so that you are losing conpression. Try the easy fixes first, though.

Have your transmission checked-if its a manual its your clutch going out.

Sound like your clutch is fried, or your throw-out bearing is shot.

If your car has an automadic trans. you may need fluid in the trans if it leaks it may be low
