Back in 1882 there was an old custom prohibiting the wearing of white after Labor Day. The custom is rooted in nothing more than popular fashion etiquette. In actuality, the etiquette originally stated that white shoes were the taboo while white or "winter white" clothes were acceptable. (from wikipedia)
In addition, it's that time of year again, when clothes get thicker and hemlines (supposedly) get longer. The lightweight lighter colors are usually packed away until warm weather reaapears.
Think about how dark colors absorb the warmth of the sun. This is probably why the tradition started. There wasn't central heating back in the 1800's and people needed to stay warm while working outdoors and in their homes.
I find it refreshing to go from lighter colors in the summer to the warmer richer colors of the winter season. Love to let my hair get a bit darker, wear darker nail polishes, etc.
I don't agree with the TLC, What Not to Wear group who says you don't have to match handbags, purses, etc and white is okay for after Labor Day. I'm not a staunch, disciplined, hard believer who has no willingness to change or try new things.
I personally, like tradition. I think keeping some traditions are a good thing and they help hold people together. This is one place I figure it doesn't hurt anyone to keep the tradition. So, there is no winter white for me and I live in sunny Florida.
Hope this helps

labor day is traditionally the end of summer.....we put away summer clothing then and go into fall clothes or transitional clothing. the rule is no white before Easter and no white after labor day. there is also a rule about not wearing wool until October.
these rules are really just fashion advise....lots depends on your climate. wearing white on a chilly day is not good....a darker color is much more in sync with the season....

An old custom prohibits the wearing of white after Labor Day. The custom is rooted in nothing more than popular fashion etiquette.[1] In actuality, the etiquette originally stated that white shoes were the taboo while white or "winter white" clothes were acceptable.[2] This custom is fading from popularity as it continues to be questioned and challenged, particularly by leaders in the fashion world. "Fashion magazines are jumping on this growing trend, calling people who 'dare' to wear white after Labor Day innovative, creative, and bold. Slowly but surely, white is beginning to break free from its box, and is becoming acceptable to wear whenever one pleases. This etiquette is also compared to the Canadian fashion rule of not wearing green after Remembrance day. "[3]

You haven't been keeping up with the times. Also, I was under the impression that that only applied to shoes. Anyway, watch What Not To Wear on TLC! Durring the into there is actually a sign that comes up that says: WHITE SHOES PERMITTED AFTER LABOR DAY!

It's nothing really but a long time ago white was a summer color and labor day was the mark or fall and winter so you would put it away and start to wear warmer browns and stuff like that.

I don't know if it is a "fixed" rule, but to me, white is more of a Summer color (or lack of), while for the (upcoming) Fall, a wider array of colors is appreciated, perhaps because we are heading into a "darker" season.
