Cherokee County, Georgia has passed a law that makes English the official language starting 1/1/07. This means that all documentation printed by that county will be in English, not in English and Spanish. The idea is to get Spanish speaking people to learn English. The law will also fine landlords who rent to illegal immigrants. The ACLU is planning to sue, and folks are in an uproar.. Do you think this law is fair?

Yes I do. Is it asking too much for immigrants to this country to learn our language and come in legally? I don't think it's an unreasonable requirement. When immigrants came here 100+ years ago, somehow they learned to speak English. What's the problem with the present flood of immigrants? They need to learn the same as everyone else did. If you come into this country illegally, you are breaking the law, When you break the law, you lose certain rights, plain and simple. The "A" in ACLU stands for "AMERICAN", not "ILLEGAL ALIEN". They better get their priorities straight.

The documentation thing, maybe or maybe not. But forcing the landlords to pay a fine for renting to undocumented illegal aliens is a start. Americans complain about illegal immigrants taking up jobs, or getting land that shouldn't belong to them, sending money back where it shouldn't go, but they never stop to consider the fact that if these illegal immigrants weren't being aided by their fellow Americans, they wouldn't have these things. The real conflict is that Mexican culture and people are new and scary to Americans, who are close minded superficial idiots who like feeling comfy cozy in their own little familiar corner of the world. That is what makes people lash out against Mexicans, who by the way do more for our economy, and sacrifice more for our typical standard of life than most American citizens do. It's about time that these half-@ssed hypocritical protestors enforce something that actually involves and addresses all parts of the "problem".
The ACLU only jumps in at political correctness, which is a crock of sh*t on all levels, which is successfully turning the typical hard-@ss tough skinned arrogant American idiots into soft sapsucking yellow-bellied over-sensitive American idiots. Racial slurs are one thing, they do need to stop. Political correctness and the fear of being politically incorrect in the late eighties all the way through the nineties churned out a whole generation of rowdy, unruly, stupid children who grew up with no discipline, no real education, no respect for any elders, and no concept of reality, who thought that if they were rebellious they'd become astronauts. Look at kids today! They're stupid, vulgar, disrespectful, violent, and they know that the new way of parenting, the whole concept of 'letting your child express himself' and that the wave of politically correct morons debating the 'humanity of spanking' ensures that they can do just about anything and never worry about getting punished. Do away with political correctness for good!
Now with the document thing, I'd say that it is probably an order that is long overdue. If Latino people were truly trying to learn English I strongly believe they would have been able to associate the words and letters and sounds in English with those of the Spanish language. In my experience I've seen that most are quick learners, and are pretty perseverant when they want or need something. If they were gonna learn they'd have done it by now. So I think the best thing probably is to make it a little awkward for them. It will force them to learn one way or another, if they don't have an available translation in their faces, and they are trying to function in an English speaking society.

Listen to puzzedinphx, we passed a law in Colorado with the same thing, including hospital visits could only be emergencies, unless for prenatal care. Then our local school district just hired 4 bilingual teachers for the purpose of guaranteeing that all the children in our school are bilingual by the year 2008. I still have neighbors that are illegal aliens. The people that snowplow our parking lot at work hire ONLY illegal aliens.

Basically, the government can pass all the laws they want, but they never allocate the money to enforce them.

Then there is the incompetent INS. One of my cousins worked for the sheriffs department, and they called the INS to report a house with several illegal aliens. The sheriffs department raided that house two days later, and it was empty. They think that the INS tipped them off, because they didn't want to spend the money to deport them.

The State of Arizona passed a lawseveral years ago for english as the official language. Ha, ha--everything is still in two languages. As for the renting to illegals, that is almost like the no hiring of illegals, doesn't work. Refering to no documentation.

Nice. The ACLU can go suck a big one. Illegals have no rights as far as Im concerned. They should be happy with a cardboard box.
Spanish speaking people should learn English. I get annoyed every time I see a sign in Spanish. If they cant learn the language they should just leave.

YES.
Grew up in Jersey in the 50's and 60's.....
lots of Eastern Europeans....
Hungarians...Polish...Ukranian.
Hardly knew a word of English.
They learned fast because they had to and they did not make demands that the government accomodate them.
They were glad to be out of Communist Country.
Now we got people sending their born in the U.S.A anchor babies to first day of school with no English language skills and they still demand that they be accomodated. To the detriment of the education system.
Asians pick up the language fast enough also.
And English has got to be harder for them.
Yet they excel.

Those laws sound fair to me. As for the ACLU, I thought it was the AMERICAN Civil Liberties Union, not the Undocumented Illegal Immigrant Civil Liberties Union.

it relatively is significant study the language of your observed united states to combine and that could be useful you liked ones. i'm particular that maximum immigrants who got here from Europe took one or 2 generations to truly grasp the language or they had to be right here truly youthful. yet even the Italians for the main section nevertheless know Italian. it is likewise significant to maintain your language and bypass it to you descendants. The Language of the North necessary and South Americas are French English Spanish and Portuguese. If English in straightforward terms human beings hate residing among us then you truly choose head back to the united kingdom or Europe. nicely could be no longer Europe because of fact Europeans are multilingual. And the English will hammer your English besides. If it wasn't for the Spaniards as much as I hate to declare it, your early ancestor might had in no way observed till lots lots later. Yes, but as usual the ACLU will go find some Carter appointed federal judge to declare it "unconstitutional". After the judge decides this,he/she will actually read the Constitution to look for a way to make it fit the ruling.
