I asked a question earlier but did not make myself clear...
When I first purchased my dell computer it had windows XP, I eventually got a virus which caused the computer to crash deleting everything. I asked a friend of mine to help, and he loaded windows 2000 professional onto the computer as he said it would be safer. I eventually lost sound and I didn't do anything about it for a long time. I have backed everything up onto disk and I want to restore the computer to its original settings so I can get both sound and Windows XP back. I have Norton GoBack but it is only allowing me to go back a couple of days so I am unable to use this. I'm not sure what to do...

The only way to do it is to buy the XP system on disc and reinstall, which could be expensive!
The original XP files have been wiped by the installation of the 2000...;

Tap the F-10 key when your computer is starting. This is called a system recovery. Just follow the directions. Your computer will look like brand new, when you are finished. Then install your windows firewall, do windows update (express) then put your antivirus, and antispyware back on, before you go back on the internet. I did this 3 times, and it does a great job. It will take about 45 minutes..Good Luck..

i think i know exactly what you mean,by using the recovery cd,this is a disc that came with your computer when you first bought it,if you have lost it contact dell and they will send you a replacement disc
this disc will re-install your windows xp and once complete your computer will be exactly the way it was when you first took it out the box
you will loose all your data but as you have said you have saved all your data to disc thats not a problem
what the recovery disc has is all the drivers ,service packs all designed and configured to your particular computer
once you have installed the recovery cd/dvd its just a case of installing security software and updated video drivers and your away
this is the only sure fire way to get your computer back to its full working order
any probs let me know
good luck

sounds like the corruption is fairly deep within the comp if you swapped OS and still had problems. If you have everything backed up on disk perhaps it is time to get a new comp and load it all onto there. Sorry if this wasn't the advice you were after.

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

Restart it, then before it's turned back on,
just keep pressing f1 continuely, until the setting screen comes on, then somewhere in there, find where it says to restore to default.

u have to uninstall the go back
i think
then go thru control panel
to get to restore to factory settings.
this should work but i would
wait for someone who really knows
to give u an answer, i.e. they are
such and such....computer technician
once back to factory it is irreversible i think but if u get
there it should be ok.
good luck and check those answers carefully!
