They couldn't figure out how to tax it. Because people could make it themselves. So they made it illegal and that's how they got their money, through fines.

After the Armistice in 1918, the Nation wanted, so to speak, to "get back to normal"-----meaning a return to prewar standards and life. The portion of the country that is still Neanderthal in its thinking today, the South and the Farm Belt States, found themselves increasingly out of touch with the new circumstance we found ourselves in as a true World Power, and with the new sophistication we were developing as a people.
One of the easiest things to attack is people's moral(?) behavior, and the Nation was also, after the War, pretty isolationist. A lot of the recent immigrants since 1890 came from other than Anglo-Saxon countries, where alcohol was an accepted part of normal life.
The movement to ban alcohol began and grew from these factors, and the Congress simply reflected the view of a vocal minority.
The mistake was rectified after 14 years of failure as a National policy.

You probley wont like my answer , but I wish they did something about it now , there are people killing people drunk and mine as well familys cant make it with drunks that live in homes so many have to suffer when people have the sickness of boose Im sorry but Iam up set because people are going on about people who smoke and they dont say anthing about these people who drink and put the world through so much and I do have a drink for Christmas or special times but these people when you add it up that before they will stop they will take their can or bottle instead of their children or their own lives . There are so many , so many young people going this way these days starting out thinking they are having fun , why cant they have fun sober? What is wrong with this picture ? The young are the ones that are going to be making our country better but how are they going to do this being worse than the ones that are there now ? Dont get me wrong there are great kids out there that will make a difference I just know we need help and better ways to live and us older young smile are depending on you guys to make things better we love you and it scares me when in my own family kids and grandchildren some cant have fun without drinking and to me this is taking away from these great brains that everyone depends on to make this a better place for all , I love you guys and want only the best for each and every one of you and I mean this from the bottom of my heart .

Google "history of painkillers" or "drugs 1800" or some such. The whole story of drug and alcohol laws are intertwined. Morphine addiction in WWI was a biggie just prior to Prohibition, and is a good short-version starting point.

One of my history teachers told us that lawmakers banned alcohol b/c women were being more into the american system for rights that they were tired of their husbands coming home drunk. Beating them, and their children and other stuff.

It was a period where the prudes of moral political correctness got the upper hand. It took only a short time to demonstrate that it didn't work and in fact made things worse.
