Graffiti is another outlet of communication or language. Expressed in an art form.
Unfortunately, THE CURRENT INSTITUTION sees it as vandalism.
And that is sad.

Vandalism, if done on property that the 'artist' does not own. It can not be ancient yet since it still is a contemporary art form. The ones that vandalise private property give a bad name to the true graffiti artist making others only think of it as a nusance.

Hi, my name is philip.
I just moved from europe and now I live in michigan...
I grew up with graffiti, heres the thing I started art when I was about 4 and by the age of 10 I started sketching and by the age of 12 I started graffiti.
Graffiti is definitly ART!! but it can be mixed with vandalism, but when it is done illegally there is still ART involved you are creating a piece of art ( ugly or abstract or what ever ), Street art basicaly its hard to understand it but too bad people dont accept it as ART, If you do it on an aproved wall or your own wall or someones wall that allows you yes its definitely ART.
Graffiti isnt just writing words on a wall or tagging your name everywhere, Take DAIM as an example he does graphics and realistical organisms on walls, he makes T-shirts with his art on it but its art is graffiti, or take BANKSY he is an artist he does graffiti but mixes it up with other types of art.
It's also a ancient type of art but graffiti is considerd writing your name or words on a wall with spraypaint, but did you ever know that us graffiti artists use vinyl stickers, paint ( buckets ) and other things...?
Well anyways thanks you, and your welcome

Graffitti is NOT an Ancient type of art. In Ancient times they didn't deface walls. (You'd probably face some serious punishment.) If your implying to caves or the sort it was a way of picturial communication, due to writing not being discovered until later.

excellent question...tag and graffiti are modern adaptations of the ancient art forms found on the pyramid walls and the cave drawings from pre-historic times. it is from the same primal core of humanity that demands expression, and that part of us that want to leave a clue that we "have been by this way".
and it is a whole art form and discipline in itself.
i think there is alot of beautiful art produced by the "tag-artist".
it is fascinating stuff.

That is a really good question, I've never thought of grffiti as art but really it is.
But of course, missplaced art can also be vandalism, so its both.
