Clearly, history, as a field, studies past human activities. As such it is considered to be a social science, but it is much more. The study of history is merely cursory without the delving into supportive issues. For example, to study the history of the civil means little if one doesn’t understand the battles as to why each occurred, who were the participants and their abilities and biographies, the weapons used and their development, the lay of the land and how it impacted the battle, the weather on the day of the battle and days leading up to the battle. All of this takes on depth when viewed against a panorama of the preceding years of cultural evolution, as well as understanding of the differences between each individual State.

Such study aids understanding those events of the past, and in so doing, we come to understand those people of that age, which helps us to understand our age and people.

Our brain has a need for creating stability not just basic functioning. A basic need to tie things to the past and to a future is called expectations. Our brain is happy when expectations for life are good. History develops a profound sense of expectation and we are less shaken in our beliefs when we know we have seen this before in history. Human brains get very upset when they are forced to relearn. nonetheless some minds have ceased to develop a focus on world history but rather focus on pleasure history producing endorphins. These minds worry about the history of partners and pleasures. They devote much energy to secret communications to maintain high rates of copulation in a restrictive society. A great variety of life forms are all what we call human.

By studying History you can get a sense of who you are and where you came from.

Without knowing how things happened before you how will you ever be able to understand life today?

(It's not that hard to understand)
Look at this way. If you had no memory of when you were small, or no memory of your parents. All you know is that your name is Mike, you like so and so and you live in an apartment. How did you get there? What linked your past to your present? Why is your name Mike?

Without studying History and having an understanding of it you ultimately don't know yourself.

Hope it helps.

In Ghana, there is an Adinkra symbol called Sankofa. It's a bird that is looking over it's back while flying forward. It symbolizes that one must know their history, where they have been, what they've done in order to move forward.

There is the saying "history repeats itself" and that's true, especially when those making decisions don't know what that history is to begin with.

You can think about it in your own life: Have you ever done something in your past where the result was not good. Maybe you tried a stupid stunt where you got hurt bad. If you forget about that, you might try it again b/c you don't remember what the result was. If you remember it, it wold be doubtful you'll ever try it again.
