I have to restart the computer to get it back. Nothing else works. The connection icon says I've still got a connection. Turning the modem off and on doesn't help. Logging on as administrator and resetting the connection doesn't help. Once in a great while restarting Explorer helps, but lately even that's not helping.

The computer in question is the main computer in our house. It's directly hooked up to my broadband wireless router. The other computers in the house have no trouble staying connected. I've moved to AT&T's broadband service from Cox, and this problem existed with Cox as well. I have Adaware and antivirus programs installed - no spyware or viruses are causing this.

I decided to repost this question because the answers from the previous attempt pretty much just asked about things that I've included as additional details above.

What do you guys suggest? (Switching to a Mac is not the cost-effective answer I'm looking for.)

It could be a hardware issue with your network adapter in your computer, especially if it is one of those software based PCI ethernet adapters. Otherwise, I'd venture to say the device drivers for your ethernet card may have become corrupt. I'd uninstall it (from add/remove hardware) and reinstall it. First, try to find updated drivers from the manufacturer's website. Use that for the reinstall.

you may have a problem with your broadband wireless router. Some brands have problems like that.try getting a new one and if you use a PCI card for your computer to go online than make sure that is in all of the way.if getting a new broadband wireless router doesn't work it maybe the computer you could buy a PCI card and run it wireless if you wanted if not you may have to get a Ethernet card.
GOOD LUCK

You need to run some more tests. It could be anything from a bad LAN cable to the computer to a problem in your computers LAN hardware. Try another computer on the same cable and see if it has the same problem. (Borrow a laptop if necessary). Swap the LAN cable to the computer with another cable. If it turns out to be the computer and there are no viruses, then a very inexpensive LAN card installed in the computer may fix your problem.
