I have a PC that has become non-operative due to the fact that I have uninstall Norton anti-virus software with some of my programmes and I have not been able to boot up the PC as some programmes are missing. So what can I do to reformat the harddrive so that it can be functional again and what software do I need to reformat it? Thanks.

Click my computer, then right click on your drive icon and select format. But be aware you will need to re-install everything even Windows. First try right click on drive icon , properties, tools, then "check now" tick both boxes and restart PC. takes a couple of hours but worth a try first.

Get your Windows XP restore CDs that came with your computer. Instead of doing a repair install or in-place file replacements, tell it to format the drive and performa a clean install. If you have a restore partition, this will peform the same function when you boot into it.

Oh yeah... it will probably restore Norton as well... so... uninstall it the very first thing. I never had a problem doing away with Norton so long as it was the first thing I did. It will only do that if Norton was preinstalled on your PC.

Instead of reformatting, why not attempt a Repair Install (assuming you're using Windows XP).

Check out the following link.

Basically, this process allows you to reinstall Windows so that it's again functional, but it leaves most of your application settings and stuff intact; you'll need to reinstall few if any of your applications, and you won't lose any of your personal data.

One note, be sure to update your computer after you've completed the Repair Install, because it will be as if you freshly installed in terms of updates.

Easiest way to do this is to reinstall windows by booting up with the windows install CD or the recovery CD that came with your PC. This will however erasae everything.

A better thing to try first would be the norton removal utility from here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2002061016251406?Open&docid=2002031914291648&nsf=ent-security.nsf&view=ppfdocs

Make sure you have a disk for an operating system and that you know where and what all your bits are and have the software for them, ie modems, video cards, etc. Go to tools and select format. harddrive.
