We will be traveling to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic this coming January. I am looking for some outings to do there, any ideas on things we should see while we are visiting there. Also, any comments on what to avoid.

Avoid: all inclusive hotels. They will ruin your trip.

If you are going to the Puerto PLata region, stay in Sosua or Cabarete. Just pick a nice hotel, and then go out to bars and restaurants you like, spend the day at Sosua beach or Cabarete beach. You will encounter people who can tell you where to go. Grigri Laguna is really nice, and a ot of other paces.

If you go to an all-inclusive, they will tell you it is dangeous outside just because they want to sell you their tours. Don't believe the sh*t they tell you.

All-inclusives are ruining the island!!!

Sosua and cabarette are the best places to stay. In puerto plata there is the national amber museum. They have many fine amber samples with insects and animals trapped inside. Another interesting spot is the 400 year old spanish fort in puerto plata. There is a cable car that goes up the mountian overlooking puerto plata, the veiw is great but with the DRs sparodic electricity you could get stuck on it for a while. The jeep safari is the best way to see the countryside. I always go for the all inclusive, otherwise you will be bartering for every meal and locals will try to rip you off. Some people say not to go out at night , but I never had a problem hitting the bars in Sosua.
