I agree with your husband. Reinstalling XP is the easiest thing to do and the computer will be totally clean and run better for your nephew that way.

If you are selling your computer, thoroughly clean your hard drive. Deleting files and reformatting is not enough. Reformatting does not overwrite every sector, and private information can remain retrievable. Use a secure delete or disk wiping utility to overwrite every sector on all hard drives. Be sure to use a utility that supports the U.S. DoD standard of seven passes or wipes. While this method is good enough for most people, be aware that the only absolute way of destroying all traces of everything your hard drives is to have these disks degaussed (demagnetized) and physically destroyed.
Suggested: BCWipe, Evidence Eliminator, or SDelete.
After you clean your hard drive re-install windows from your manufactuer disk.

Fdisk and format it but make sure you have all the disks that came with it to re-install any needed drivers, like for sound and video etc. Installing XP again will still leave un-necessary files.
this tells how to format XP

Just format the hard-disk and reinstall "Windows". This way you won't waste lots of time (it takes 30 minutes to me to format an 80GB drive and install "Windows XP") and the computer will be as new.

If you want everything undone, buy WipeDrive ($20)
Follow instructions to wipe the harddrive(s), then reinstall XP. You might want to set the basic stuff up, depending on how computer-literate your nephew is.

that is a faster and more thorough way of doing it. just make sure to overwrite the existing partition and not create a new one (this will duplicate the win xp system files).
just so you know, this way is not pefect. some of your files (and personal information) will remain.
