Other than having companies phone (which happens rarely as Im not exdirectory) or geniune reason like having a stalker
Everyone I know who is exdirectory is a bit odd and thinks people really want to contact them and in fact it's favoured by very paranoid people who are rather weird. I know a few of them and can say there wrapped up in themselves something awful and don't realise how insignificant they are (males and females). Also they have few friends and are single (wonder why) may be think everyone is after them (yeah right).

havent tried to call anyone I just hear alarm bells when I hear "Im exdirectory" In fact I had a salon and you would take client number and they would be cagey about cos this reason and then they would not turn up for the appointment they had booked and had no method of contact with them. Obviously people like this are black listed but get the jist, there the same mould. Keep away from these folk!!

My own number is ex=directory and I would say I was fairly normal
The main reason for the ex-directory was the constant harrassment by compnies selling things or doing surveys. In one case the same company rang our house 5 times. These calls usually come around 6pm, which is the last thing you want after a hard day at college/work.
Many are Indian call centres as well. I recognise they are only doing their job, but most of them either have strong accents or barely understand what is being said to them, which is very frustrating and irksome.
Sometimes ex-directory is the only option for some peace and quiet in the evening.

Lets get this clear if you are not ex directory then you are listed in your telephone companies phone book, also if they have an online system, also if someone phones directory enquiries they can get your no. I don't think wanting to keep your no private so you have control over who has your no and can therefore get access to you is being wierd. Okay so you don't mind people getting access to your no - fine. Try having your phone going non stop for 4 hours and everytime you answer it is either a deadline or an automated message telling you to press this key and that key. You might like that, personally I don't. My phone no is for my friends and family to contact me - not for anyone wanting to sell me stuff I don't want or just make a call to me because they think it's funny. So if that makes me a weirdo I'm fine with that!!!

Well good for you but I'm ex-directory and I get loads of companies calling me so I would hate to think how bad it would be if they had easy access to my number. Why is it such a problem to you? You obviously have tried to get hold of someone that doesn't want you mythering. Maybe you're the reason they are ex directory.

It helps to keep down the number of callers who are flogging stuff in the area. Plenty of phone book trawelers around now you can get free unlimited calls.
I like the idea that only people I want to contact me easily can phone me. My fax number is not ex-dir, not do I make an effort to hide my email address. I just like some say over who is going to telephone me.
I just find "Hello this is Astraseal, we would like to...." type calls at 9pm bloody irritating. when I went ex-dir, the number of cold calls by phone plummeted. Good enough for me :)

My telephone is for emergencies only. I detest chatting on the phone. I am ex-directory so that I do not have to speak to any one I don`t want to speak to.
