I am currently doing an assignment which contains abbreviations for different unions, for example the NUS. What would be the correct grammatical way to put the within an assignment, like this: N.U.S or like this: NUS?

Periods are not necessary but I would suggest that the first time you use the acronym you put the full name in parenthesis afterwards.

For example: "She was a founding member of NOW (the National Organization for Women) and worked towards its goals her whole life."

I would use the full words first time I used it, and then use NUS (no dots) when using it after that.

Occasionally someone might not know what the abbreviation stands for - so if you get into the habit of using the full name at first mention then you can't go far wrong.

Try to find their logo or information on how the refer to themselves. One more suggestion? Atleast once in your paper put the full name in parenthesis next to which ever abbreviation is right.

I wouldn't bother with the dots, just give the full name the first time you use the abbreviation.

You should first write the name of the Union in full and put the acronym in brackets and use the acronym thereafter. You will not need full stops between letters.

in proper context you would spell out full name then put the abbreviation in Parentheses after it, then you can use the abbreviation only from then on out and be understood of its meaning.

for established and well known abbreviations u can freely use the acronyms.... (and you don't have to put the dots in between the alphabets)

I think NUS is alright! That's what their 'logo' looks like..
