They do stand up but only against other tribes or families. They do not stand up for Iraq as a nation. This is the part the USA did not understand when it went into Iraq. It is not a true nation in our sense, but it is a grouping of different tribes, families, and religious sects. It is much like Yugoslavia was before each of the differing groups got its own country. Like Tito in Yugoslavia, Saddam held these warring groups together. When Saddam was gone there was nobody to keep a lid on the country. We thought they would embrace democracy, but they embraced an internal power struggle.

Iraq really is not a nation. It was cobbled together from elements of the old Ottoman Empire. There are no Iraqis, Tribal and sectarian religion have more to do with where one's allegiance lies. Therefore you won't see a national identity or sense of purpose or even agreement on even the most basic things when the participants view changes as a zero sum situation.
It may be the Iraqis want freedom from the US and a chance to settle their own affairs...we can't prevent a civil war any more than the EU or NATO could keep Yugoslavia from disintegrating. Either that or bring back Saddam.
How do you know the Iraqis want freedom? What kind of freedom ? I bet many would be happy to have a system
equivalant to Egypt or even Syria...if only to have basic services, a lid on violent extremism and routine stability.
We are stuck there in an impossible situation for who knows how long

HOW DARE YOU ASK THIS QUESTION?
They were all fine under Saddam. UNDERSTAND THE ISSUE: Saddam only killed people who stood against him. He DID NOT go around killing civilians like most of you believe.
So it was a stabilized and balanced Iraq; but you have to invade it, with more the 200,000 civilians (does the word make any sense to you?) killed, and now a civil war.
America screwed them and now they are supposed to get back up? I DON'T THINK SO, LADY.
This is what happens when you think you are so good and try to do something.
Vietnam: America abandoned the Vietnamese people to the killer commies.
Afganistan: After helping the Afgans against the Soviets in the 1980's, the Soviets left. Then America withdrew from Afganistan and let the terrorist Taliban take control. What a ploy!
Iraq: America invades a so called "dictatorship" (understand that some dictators have a brain) to "liberate" and bring democracy to the people. BS, the Iraqi people were already liberated and happy. Before America invaded Iraq, there were no bombs, kidnappings, and bombings! Only after the invasion.
THINK FOR YOURSELF.
I am going to get a lot of "thumbs down" for saying all this but I don't care. I don't like the liars distorting the truth.

It all depends upon how you feel about the invasion of Iraq. I frankly do not feel that America should have invaded Iraq with only the British as our true ally. Several countries sent a few men but they were virtually useless. We should have waited for our good friends in Europe to aid us with the problem of WMD. We did not invade Iraq to give them freedom. This excuse came later when no weapons of mass destruction were found. We should leave Iraq as soon as we can to spare American lives and let the Iraqis fight it out among themselves. They have been killing each other for centuries so what is different now? American style democracy will never work in Iraq. They have always been led by Sultans, High holy men, Princes, etc. and they will not convert to democracy because they need someone to always tell them what and how to do it. I cannot argue with your logic because it is based on fact not fiction.

No, the Iraqi people want to be free, they love all the help that we give them. But the insurgents are not Iraqi people, so make sure when you're thinking of an Iraqi, you're not thinking of insurgents.
We are over there to help them rebuild their country, i.e. their Military and law enforcement. Soon, they will be able to fight and defend for themselves, but until then they need our help.
I know this, I have just return from Iraq a few months ago.

If we just got the hell out of Iraq and let them sort things out they would take charge of their own affairs .We got rid of Saddam and that.s a good thing But we could have accomplished that by giving the Iraqis the means to do it themselves

Maybe they want security and stability more.Maybe families prefer to give in to mob rule if it means their babies don't get slaughtered.War is ugly.
As long as no one will enforce the rule of law, people will choose survival, that's human instinct.
When someone on the streets attacks you with great violence, armed, how are you gonna stand up?Do you really believe extreme violence can be overcome by just standing up?If you stand up to insurgents in Iraq, you get shot.
Not all people are hero's,not here, not in the US and not in Iraq!
Most people just want the best for them and their families

The're trying, but as someone else said they don't have all of the tools of the trade yet. Also, the training they are getting is nothing more than a basic training boot camp. Our soldiers get that, then more training on top of that before they go to battle. The study group even said that..

Why don't the Iraqi people stand up against insurgents? They are. They've joined the many militias and death squads.
Why are military and police force incompetent? The best fighters belong to the militias and death squads.

They had all the freedom they ever wanted. Only America took it away by a dumb invasion.
