I'm a grad student and do a lot of online classes. I would think that people who are also at the same education level would be able to spell correctly and would be careful about their grammar. We do turn in lots o papers and I would think that most of them, if they are even being read by the instructor, would fail or get very low grades.
That said, shouldn't it be starting with Kindergarten? These kids are doing themselves an injustice but since they are kids, don't the parents have the responsibility to see that they are doing well? What about the teachers? Shouldn't they be checking the work and promoting excellence in students?

As a teacher, I can say that we DO focus on excellence in students. I also agree that American education is lacking, but it's for so many reasons that I couldn't possibly list them all in the hopes of getting 10 points. There is a serious lack of accountability for parents and students in America. There's a serious lack of accountability in the real world as well. We can ALWAYS find an excuse for poor behavior, and the same can be said for poor work. Until we start expecting excellence, we won't get it. It's as simple as that.

Keep in mind that with young students, we can't just mark up papers in red. It's too overwhelming for children. We focus on a particular area that needs improvement until it's corrected, and then we focus on other areas. If a student writes an entire page of content without a single period, I'm not going to spend my time correcting spelling and word choice. I'm going to spend my time helping the student learn when and where to use punctuation.

I hear ya though about your peers. It drives me crazy when I see an email from a teacher (or worse, from an administrator) with grammatical and spelling errors. How can I teach 9 year olds the difference between "your" and "you're" when NO ONE ELSE bothers to learn it? It's frustrating. Keep preaching, sistah. Maybe one day they'll get it.

It's not the education system. It's the family unit and the way that children are socializing these days. The school systems cannot go up against what really holds these chidlren's interests. Parents are not reading to their children anymore. Families are not sitting and talking at a table over dinner. Children are not hanging out together in a yard inventing games to play. They are stationed in front of some sort of high tech machine and are scheduled playdates. They have frozen chicken nuggets thrown down their throats between dance class and karate. The education system fights with this on a daily basis. Children don't know how to hold conversations, pay attention, or interact with eachother. It really is a shame.

because of fact i do no longer inevitably agree that on time commencement value is a physically powerful indicator of the time-honored of the education. in reality one ought to argue that a severe value is indicative of a miles less complete education.

First I'm assuming you're Irish? You speak of proper grammar and you utilize improper English by saying "...lots o papers"? Don't throw stones in glass houses.

Why worry about the speck in everyone else's eye and ignore the plank in your own? Just work on doing the best that YOU can and let everybody else worry about their own inadequacies.
