are you talking about a $20 per day late fee? if that is the case then it would be illegal even if you have a signed lease

I charge $35/per day - starting at 5:01 p.m. on the due date.....there is no grace period in my leases.....It's supposed to be an outrageous amount to keep your rent priority number one.

Each state governs how late fees can be charged.....just google your state and landlord/tenant laws.

If it's in the lease, it probably is legal and correct. However, state law may regulate this, so check with a tenant rights group in your area, or search for your state law on the subject online.

I am not sure if it is legal. Where I live there is no grace period at all and they charge 30.00 the first day and 5.00 each additional day if it is late. You will probably have to check your local laws on this.

It's probably a late fee and yes it's legal, assuming it was disclosed in your contract. Don't be late with your rent! If your rent is more than 1 weeks pay you need to find a cheaper apartment.
