no snide comments please, this is serious. my sister, who has worked all her life, is now at 52, has just £70 pounds a month to live on. she lives with me and i am supporting her, she cashed in her pension, which is what our government let you do, to buy a house to rent out , the house will never be hers, interest only payment, the monies she recieves from this just about covers the interest. due to ill health, she had to give up her job as a teacher, truthfully she is an alcoholic, this is what i mean aabout snide comments, so please don't go there, i live with her and its hard work,, but i feel for her, there for the grace of god go anyone of us. diversifying , sorry, well anyway, when she went to sign on for job seekers allowence, they told her she was not entitled to any money because she had this house, it is classed as unearned income, she is trying now to sell it, a buy to let was an investment for her future, i know ironic, but still?

is she ill due to her alcoholism? if so she needs to sort her health out first, then she can find a new job to support herself, shes still young, certainly not passed it in any sense. you're being a wonderful sister supporting her and if you can just hold on until she's passed this, then im sure she will repay you greatly one day xxxx

It is good of you to support your sister considering her alcoholism. I am a recovering alcoholic-20 years sober. Anyone who lives with an active alcoholic needs the patience of a saint. Has she tried alcoholics anonymous 0845 7697555.
There is another fellowship called Al-Anon for relatives and friends of alcoholics 020 74030888
I hope this helps because the first thing she needs to do is get sober before she can solve any other problem. Her doctor will no doubt give her a sick note for awhile whilst she attends meetings.
God bless you both.

why is she not getting SS.....surely she would fall into the category of disabled due to not being able to work............go to the DHSS office [not sure what they are calling them selves these days] get an interview and go from there...........this is WAY below the government level for living so some one has mucked up some place.............you also might want to try the local citizens advice bureau, ask at local library for any advocate groups they are usually a GREAT source of info............

EDIT..............maybe so but this is starting to have an obvoius impact into your life and life style so maybe you could do some research on your wn and actually find out whats what for her, pride sometimes has to suck big bums......as basically IF you was not there to catch her the fall would be a big one.........

your sister may be entitled to incapacity benefit as she cannot currently work due to illness. a word of warning is that if she sells her rental property she may be liable to capital gains tax dependant upon the profit she makes on it as it has never been her principal private residence.
