My best friend is conducting her class from student teaching today and she asked a long time ago if I would come. I told her I would have to see that day b/c I have 2 huge exams the next day and I have to finish things up for other classes. So I worked till 1am last night trying to get things done so I could go and She asks this morning if I am coming. I told her no b/c I have way too much to do. Plus it would be taking 3-4 hours away from the day. THe problem is I have been there for her every time except this one time and she's pissed. Yet, when my granny died, when we had our jazz concert, and when she didnt even ask how I did on the huge test she knew about she wasnt there. She's never there. What do I do? Am I being mean? Or do I have a decent reason for not going? What do I do about our friendship? Also i've talked to her about this when my Granny died so it's no secret.

Sounds to me like you have your answer already. It's completely reasonable for you not to go. School comes first and if she were truly your friend she would understand that. I get her being disappointed, but why pissed? Makes no sense. As for the friendship, definitely talk to her about how you feel, and if she's not at all receptive to hearing you out, think about if that's the kind of friendship you want in your life. I've learned the hard way that not all friendships are meant to be lifelong.

Sounds like this is a one way friendship...and you need to reevaluate if that's the kind of friendship you want. Perhaps you need to point it out to her...everything you've just stated...and see where it goes from there. If she's still a little huffy about it...it may be time for you to realize what kind of friend you have in her.....she's really not there for you as a friend...so why consider her as such....

You don't need a manipulator for a friend.
