1) All teams who win their division go to the playoffs
2) The 2 teams with the next best 2 records in each conference (NFC and AFC) go to the playoffs as "wild card" teams

There are two Conferences in the NFL (the National and the American) and in each conference there are four divisions with four teams in each division. Each division has a winner (team with best record) and that team makes the playoffs. Then 2 teams in each conference who did not win their division also make the playoffs as a "wild card". These two teams who make the wild card are the teams with the Best records who did not win their division. So altogether there are 6 teams in each conference that make the playoffs.

You have 2 conferences, the American Football Conference, and the National Football Conference, each divided into 4 divisions, east, north, south, west. In each conference, the division winners are allowed a playoff berth, and are seeded 1 to 4 regarding their season (wins, losses, ties) record. Afterwards, two wildcards are distributed to those non-division champions with the conference's best winning percentage and are seeded 5 and 6.

Then 3 and 6 & 4 and 5 face each other in the wild card week-end, whilst 1 and 2 are given an automatic bye-round to advance to the next round.

The highest seed always faces the lowest seed, and always gets home-field advantage
