the problem isn't the drug itself, nor is the people that abuse them, but the laws that make them illegal causes them to be worth more than their weight in gold.
this creates a problem of making it worth more to sell those drugs than go to college and get a degree. even then people who do go to college and get a degree find they can make more using their knowledge to make drugs.
the biggest problem that causes addiction is availability. this is why there are more people addicted to cigarettes and caffeine than all the other drugs combined.
why are ilegal drugs available?? because the economic value of them makes people want to sell them, making them available, and making it worth the risk.
even if you killed addicts or drug users their would still be poeple selling and using...even tough China does this they still have a drug problem...drugs are just worth FAR FAR more profit to the people selling them, then they are here in the USA.
the illegal aspects of drugs also makes drugs adventurous and taboo. making the desire for them by people who live typical drab lives, even greater.
The unlawful nature of drugs, making people have to go to an underground dealer to get them, also exposes them to a criminal subculture and people who deal other harsher drugs.
want to get a person off drugs? show them adventure and fun without them.
not a real easy thing to do.
if it is your child, taking them out of the environment permenently is the only hting you can do. rehab has a high failure rate, because they tend to see the same old friends, but if you move hundred of miles a way, it makes it harder to get back in the scene for a little while.
one other thing you can do to convince people not to do drugs, is quit lying to them with the "one hit addiction" lie, the "lose sexual urge" lie, and all the other BS you see on commercials. if you are telling someone drugs are bad for you, and you have never ever doen them yourself, then you are only making the problem invitable!

Humans have used drugs throughout all recorded history and it's not going to stop anytime soon. I guess you would have to educate the person but how do you convince a junkie that drugs are harmful to them and others? The prison system does not work and they are just filling up space that can be occupied by violent offenders. Legalization will not work as it will just expose more people to the drugs and give them easier access. Education has to be the key but how do we go about it. It's all about personal choice and strong will.

If you are here in the US, we don't take drugs seriouslly enough.
You get a slap on the wrist and be on your way.
Some countries have 50 year jail terms or death of possesion of even the smallest amount of illegal drugs.
There is plenty of land here in the US. Take a few acres of land, put up a high fence and put all the people arrested for drug crimes in that area.
You would only need a few armed guards to stop people from leaving.
Each with a 50 year sentence. Make them grow their own food. Give them nothing. One set of cloths, a tent and sleeping bag.
NO
TV
Radio
Contact with the outside world.
Put cameras on them and have it on the net.
When people realize that is what will happen to them, soon the drug problem will go away.
No getting off because someone is a celeberty or rich, or didn't mean it. or it was their first time.
Too bad.

you can't "get people" to stop using drugs...they have to make the decision to stop. Chemical dependency is a disease and it needs to be treated as such. the so-called war on drugs is a complete joke...they are fighting a war against an in-adamant object (mostly cocaine). Cocaine is irrelevant. The problem is people's dependence upon drugs, not the drugs themselves. If you eliminated cocaine from the face of the earth, it would not reduce drug dependency at all...they would simply use something else. So, prevention and education is where the money needs to go to solve the problem.

Leagalize them, tax accordingly, and look at the socio economic environments where drug use if prevailant and provide better options. A stronger community helps. But even so this won't have much of an effect. I regard drug use as a personal choice and a personal responsibilty. This war on drugs is a total scam and failure. It may create drug addicts by making them so profitible to manufacture and sell. Better educatiton may help too,

Eliminate the demand and the drugs stop coming. Arrest people who possess and use drugs. Make it mandatory jail time for first offense. This is the same problem as illegal immigration. No demand, no availability.

You can't, because, it is a personal choice to quit drugs, and stay off.

Decriminalize the drugs and pour the money that would be used towards prosecutions for education. make the drugs unprofitable.
