who do you think is the greatest footballer ever. for me its zidane. i cant comment on maradona, or pele as i havent seen them play that much. but i grew up watching zidane, and for me he is the best i have ever seen. if not the best player eva, he certainly is the most beautiful player that this sport has witnessed. he's just about done everything in his career, won all domestic trophies with juventus, and became one of the greatest gallacticos ever at the bernabeu, and he attained the status of god in france by singlehandedly taking his team to world cup glory in 1998, and swiped aside every team in the european championshps in 2000. he was lost for a while but the real zizou returned in germany 2006, for one last hurrah, and almost added another triumph to his glittering career. but it was his performance against brazil that defined him, just like the 98 final. he showed that not even ronaldinho deserves to lick his shoes.

he outshone all others in a very competitive era.

let me remind you. that he played in the same era, as the likes, of romario, ronaldo, rivaldo, scholes, keane, figo, roberto carlos, maldini, cantona, henry, giggs, raul, vieira, and so many more. as great as pele and maradona may have been, but i dont think their were many other great players during their time, that set the world alight.

zizou is the greatest. their is something different about him when he plays with the ball. its almost as he is dancing whenever he is playing. all those roulletes and stepovers. he just waltzes about on the pitch, and it compels you to watch.

he is truly the greatest player ever

I am a firm believer that as a general trend athletes only get better with time, that today's greatest athletes are better than the greatest from years ago, and future athletes will be better than the greats of today. That's bound to happen as people learn new training and playing techniques. Now obviously there are some spectacular individuals who are so far ahead of their time that they remain the greatest player to have ever played the game for a long period of time, but the general trend is continual improvement. And since Zidane is currently the player who stands out as being so much better than his contemporaries, I agree with you that he's the best player ever. Great as Pele & Maradonna were, they just wouldn't have the stamina to play at the same level that Zizou plays at today. They weren't trained that way in the 60s or even the 80s.

Yes I love Zidane. IMO, he's the greatest player simply because he is. He's won everything there is to be won, so why not let him break the record and win the FIFA World Player award again. He deserves it so much more than Cannavaro ( disastorous at Real Madrid) and Ronaldinho ( great, but ultimately flopped at the FIFA world cup).
I don't get why Henry wasn't shortlisted though but that's another topic.
