I deal with it on a daily basis through work. Don't think that's it's going to be an amazing connection, it has some pretty serious trade-offs. You will never be able to play online games unless you force it in to dial-up mode.

Satellite is a 'high latancy' connection and you will usually see ping times of around 1000ms (1 second) rather than things like 30-50ms for DSL or cable. Your actual file transfer speeds will be close to the advertised speed though, for instance if it's 768Kbps, you will probably be able to download files at about 80KB/s.

As for reliability, they usually only fail during extreme weather. Also, they will have a 'dial backup' mode in most cases so if the satellite signal fades it will dial out and use the old fashioned way until it can re-establish the satellite link.

If it's your only option and you really NEED high speed file transfers, then yes it's worth it. If you want it because it will be like your friends DSL line, don't bother.

Remote locations are tough, whether or not satalite internet is worth it or not is up to you as to do you want to pay for the convenience. Just a thought.... do you have satalite TV? Ever get rain fade? keep in mind it affects internet also :( when the signal is good its good :) it really is to bad that cable and/or DSL is not available all over.

If you can't at least get dial-up, get it.
