I would try Googling product reviews. I am a geocacher and for handhelds, you can't beat a Garmin. The ones with the external antennae seem to give the best results.

You can also search the forums at http://www.groundspeak.com for reviews of handhelds. I don't know anything about the dash-mount ones that stay in the car.
