i respect all of my black friends, i know of black i have wanted to have a relationship with, but that's beside the point. my question might be sensitive.. what do you guys consider yourselves, african americans or just african? or just american, i am asking you this because my black friends like to go back to their native roots from where their ancestors came from and they do not like it when i just say they are simply america, one of my friends is jamacan and she goes wild when i say she is american, she said, she is jamaciam, her heritage is jamacan, but she was born here , is it wrong for me to consider all blacks just african , i mean that is where blacks come from isn't it and what do you guys want to consider yourselves

I'm Trini-Haitian American because my dad was born in Trinidad and my mom's parents were born in Haiti so therefore I consider myself of Haitian and Trinidadian descent. I hate being called an American because I don't consider myself to be that.

first, their ancestors are from Africa and that is why they are called African American not Africans as you have stated. second they believe that knowing their roots is very important and they will always want to let their future generation to know where they came from. calling themselves African America is a away of them to keep their ancestral line . all blacks living in north America, south and Central America, Asia, Europe and pacific all comes from Africa . it is wrong for you to call African Americans Africans because they were not born in Africa and the only people you would label Africans are those born in Africa. Africans born outside their native land as a result of slavery like in north America are called African American because their DNA is half white and black.

It does not matter whether you're black or white, right?. My opinion is that if you were born in America, you should call yourselves American so that there will be no racial dispute. However, if you want to trace your roots, then its another story. I believe most of the Americans have their roots spread all over the world, right?. So just be patriotic to the country that you were born with and everything will be fine.

You should consider you friends as they identify themselves. If you tell me your American, your American, if you tell me your Irish-American...that's what you are. Why do you question their self-identity. Your Jamaican friend should only had to "go wild" one time, you should have apologized and never refer ed to her that way again. You say you respect your friends, but this is disrespectful, as is generalizations, we are all individuals with the right to self- identify as we wish. True friends do not question this.

well,
I was born in america but my roots go to Barbados and africa

so i consider myself american because i was born in america

and i guess its that person's idea on what they consider themselves

If i was born in africa then i'd say african

I know i have african roots and barbados roots because my great great grandparents
But i would consider my self american

if they were born in this freakin country they're americans..how can they be african if they've NEVER set foot in africa? Their ancestors were pure africans...and that's it....their HERITAGE (the so called african americans) is from african DESCENT...but by saying they're african means they are FROM africa...all this politically correct bs...i mean damn. What white folk have to be caucasion americans? No wait no no..they're german-americans, or dutch-americans, or freakin irish-americans. Honestly by you calling them american is accepting them for what their nationality is ....AMERICAN....all this categorizing and gettin sensitive about it is stupid...cause in essence unless their behinds were born in africa, and then moved to america..then they can have that right to call themselves african american, but i mean damn they've lived in america all their life, they're black....there's no damn mystery there. My *ss is HALF BLACK, and HALF mexican....my dad is black, he was born in america, and i'm pretty sure he can care less about that politically correct bullsH*t too..and my mom is mexican, she was BORN IN MEXICO...and came to the states, so i GUESS she can argue she's mexican american..but even then she can care less about that....you can call her spanish, hispanic, mexican...no sensitivity as long as they know she's from that decent. And i will always be considered mix.....people see me and of course by appearance say i'm black, but i won't deny either of my parent's genes...will i fuss and b*tch and get offended? No cause i know i look like that..but i'll gladly let them know i'm mixed....because well..it's the TRUTH! There's no politically correct way to call me what i am, accept maybe 'blaxican' but that's out of the convenience for me rather than saying half black half mexican.....people need to just accept the plain simple freakin truths sometimes and stop justifying irrelevant sh*t just to appease their own convenience....not everyone bows down or HAS to show empathy to just one person or people in general..sheesh....tell them to man-up and stop delving into pointless reasoning.
