U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, Democrat, Louisiana wins House runoff.

U.S. Rep. William Jefferson easily defeated his fellow Democratic opponent in a runoff election Saturday, despite an ongoing federal bribery investigation.

What are they thinking? $90,000 in bribe money found in Jefferson's freezer and he is re-elected?

Is it true that Jefferson's win confirms this city's image as corrupt and untrustworthy as it asks the nation to fund its recovery from Katrina>

State Rep. Karen Carter had sought to become the first black woman from Louisiana elected to Congress. Carter, 37, raised nearly five times as much money as Jefferson, but she was largely outflanked in the endorsement game. Jefferson was a confidant of former President
Bill Clinton and picked up the backing of Mayor Ray Nagin and other prominent black politicians..

I understand your anxiety -- I really do. But you have to place this in context. Louisiana isn't like any other place on earth -- period!

They are the only state with a French law code. They're the only state without counties (they have Parishes). They've got a long tradition of being contrary; and they're by-god intent on keeping to that tradition.

From the very beginning, Lousianna was a home of political corruption on an epic scale. They didn't care how corrupt you were so long as you took care of your constituents and sent some of the "goodies" back down their way. The state is notorious for it's corruption, and deep down inside Louisiannans are quietly proud of it. Don't try to make sense of it. Just enjoy the jazz -- pig-out on the "po' boys" and crawfish etouffee, and in general do as the natives do...

"faites les bon temps roulez."

Cheers, mate.

Why did Marion Barry keep winning in Washington DC?

No. This one election by itself is not a reflection on the entire city anymore than Tom Foley or Tom Delay are reflections of their former districts. I don't know anything about Jefferson's competition but it could be that the voters thought he was worse than Jefferson.

Trying to answer this without sounding racist...you honestly have to look at the racial make up of Louisiana. That will explain a lot.
