I think you can if you really want to change and if you work with a good councelor. Sometimes you also need medical intervention. I know for alcoholics there are certain drugs you can take so that when you drink, you get physically sick. It's supposed to help people stay sober while they get therapy to handle the emotions that go along with drinking.
Some people are more prone to addiction than others because of a combination of genetics, environment and prior experience. A lot of times an addiction manifests as a way to deal with stresss, anxiety, and other uncomfortable feelings. So, I think in the end you CAN control your addictions but it's incredibly difficult if not impossible to do it solely by yourself. You need a good support network of friends and/or family as well as some good professional help to guide you.

I don't have an addictive personality, fortunately. I've tried all kinds of drugs, and been on some for awhile, but never stayed on them once I found a reason to stop doing them and never looked back. As far as stealing and spending and hunger....those are "usually" emotional issues...which once you find the reason for your emotional distress and fix it you'll find you won't need to fill that gap, w/ negative actions. Doctors will try to tell you they are compulsive disorders, and in a select few they are, but I believe there are more folks who don't really suffer compulsive disorders, the doctors just tell them they do, put them on meds and send them on their way instead of trying to help them get to the root cause and fix the issue. Its called a quick fix and not taking responsibility for your own actions.

I can't. My addictions are food and spending money. Material things make me happy!

I control some, very easily, but I can't control others.Actually, I consider that some things are just pleasant and don't need to be controled.

I believe that it's how you are raised. Your mother and dad have more influence in your emotions than anyone.
