a humanitarian works to improve humanity, and a saint works to improve his or her soul; they are sainted after death so that the rest of us can study their example
a humanitarian can be living or dead, a saint can only be dead
many of the saints were far from humanitarian; some of them downright loathed humanity
a humanitarian may come from any faith or culture; a saint is catholic only
many humanitarians are far from "saintly",giving no conscious thought to spirituality or faith
an example of a humanitarian and a saint all in one would be St. Nicholas. He was concerned with the plight of the poor and actively worked to feed people and it was his selfless example as demonstrated by how he lived his life that qualified him to be proposed and accepted as saint.
It is a council which determines who is saint, but it is by your actions that you are determined to by a humanitarian, and some folk may not even know that you are.
