So the covers can't fall down into the hole. (Round is the only shape that assures this won't happen). And because people aren't "square" or "rectangular." We're basically round so it makes sense that the hole would be too.

so they can not fall down the hole they are covering. Also they are heavy for theft and vandalism reasons.
