why is it necessary to completely dissolve agar medium before sterilizing it?

I've always assumed that its to make sure the agar is distributed evenly. I might ask our autoclave tech monday morning!

It needs to be evenly distributed, and also any clumps may cause it to "explode" or spew scalding hot gel everywhere.
