the tank is old but we have recently built a new home, diconnected the old lines and reconnected the new ones. Before the new house, sand was an indication of a water lines leak(black mobile home plastic pipe) the new line is pvc. I forgot to mention the tank is a bladder tank.

New lines or not it sounds like one is loose ,broke or cracked.

Hopefully you remembered to put filters in your lines or that may be your problem.

Dont be cheap. Your problem most likely lies in your pressure tank. its full of crap from old line. You may want to connect a hose to your house and pump well for a while if it hasnt been being used.Sand is not always a indication of water line leak, some well naturally produce small amounts of sand.put a send filter in your new house too.

p.s. the black poly line that was run to your old house is the best way to transfer water. good luck with the pvc.replace alot of that crap.

Your tank doesn't have anything to do with it. There's only one way to get sand in the water lines, it has to be coming thru a hole in the screen of your well point. You will need to have the point replaced on your system and then all the lines purged. Just got done doing one a couple weeks ago. If the well isn't terribly deep you could try it yourself, if you're handy. Otherwise, a call to the well man is in order.

You need to install a whole house inline filter. About $50. and use a fine sediment filter cartridge for best results. Install it just after the bladder tank. Fine sediment is a common problem with well water
