Sounds like both are doing their job properly- the teacher teaching, and the kid is learning. It doesn't have to be a 'war' - believe it or not we are on the kids' side! Having a clever kid doesn't mean they are learning 'in spite' of the teacher- maybe the the teacher suits them down to the ground and they have a great relationship.

Neither, they both learn from each other. Sometimes as Teachers, we try to simplify learning, and in the process we tend to omit certain details. The student then goes home, discusses, experiments and then brings the omission to the attention of the educator and they both learn something out of it. It is a two way learning experience.

Teacher is excellent or not depends on how she teaches.Student is excellent or not depends on how he studies and makes them work in reality.
From yor question no doubt Teacher weighs more than students excellence.
But, student is also good since he remembered what he was taught, shared that with mother and also appears to be interested in studies.
IN SHORT - NEVER MEASURE PERFORMANCE BY IMPRESSION BUT DEPICTION OF PERSONALITY.
