I think its the trend to be negative about our government, I also think it is a media fed trend. Yes our government and president make mistakes and at times just flat out lie (this is true of every administration not just the present one) but would we like to live in a country run by some of the other crazy leaders out there. Don't get me wrong I can find lots of things to complain about in this country but its still a whole lot better than any alternatives I see. Perhaps we should appreciate what we have a bit more and come to grips with the fact that no country or leader is perfect.

I hadn't noticed the negative response about freedom or patriotism. I have however noticed the negative response about our government, particularly our commander in chief. I am guilty of that as well. I was born and raised in the military, and then married into it. I consider myself very patriotic, and have always supported our president, even when I didn't vote for him, out of respect for the office in which he holds. I no longer support our president, or the decisions he makes. I feel he has let us down in so many ways (too many to list). I do however, support our troops. I think all of the controversy due to the war, boarder patrol, health care, gas prices etc., have so many people upset, that their anger comes across as unpatriotic, even though thats not really the problem. I don't think just because you no longer support your presidents decisions that you are unpatriotic. I look forward to new president, whomever it is, whatever party it is, I figure its got to be better than it has been.

I don't know if people appreciate freedom. Ignorance will take it away from everyone eventually that's for sure. I don't mean the freedom to insult people or freedom to do lude things in public. Not the freedom to say the F word 500 times in one song or show your (whatever in public) I mean freedom to choose our own schools, freedom to worship when where we want and freedom to share our social views. Once the tyranny is over, once the chaos burns it's self out, all that will be left are the servants and the masters. Which one will you be?

When freedom to you means death & torture for others
&
when patriotism for you means destruction for others
sure it will get a negative respond.
gwb has used these nice words as an excuse to invade, kill, torture& destroy other countries & innocent ppl,
he invaded & destroyed Iraq under the excuse of bringing FREEDOM to its ppl!!!
how does Iraq look now with ur freedom???!!!
also gwb has turned america into a big police country, made ppl spy on each other, the gov spy on ppl,Muslims dont feel safe anymore, they even get deported from airlines just cause they prayed!!!innocent ppl gets prisoned&tortured in very unhuman ways with no fair trials, all that under the name of PATRIOTISM.
After all that u dont want to get negative responds ?
ur gov made these words meaningless,or actually gave it bad reputation.

I do not have a negative connotation with Freedom and Patriotism. I believe it is linked to the Bush Administration today, and many of our fellow countrymen are not in support of it.
So people's negative response to freedom & patriotism can be chalked up to their disappointment in our current administration.
Also be aware that most of the people on line are young and educated by LIberal institutions. Therefore a large percentage will have this view than found in the entire popoulation.

Depends on your definition of patriotism. If you are proud of your heritage there is nothing wrong in that. But if the source of your pride is your perceived supperiority of your country in relation to other countries. Sounds like the thought line behind imperialism. More or less it is how you state things, you might mean something entirely but you come across the wrong way.

Many of us here have a cynical take on how these words "freedom" and "patriotism" have been coopted by an oppressive, lying regime. So it's not the core concept we have a problem with. It is the Orwellian misuse of the terms by people who, in fact, have thrown them wholesale in the dumpster out back of the White House every opportunity they have.

Democrats are more concerned with the treatment of terrorist prisoners, than they are about their own country.
