Jose Rizal was considered a genius at the time. He speaks several languages and was very eloquent, he wrote El Filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere, which paved the way for a Filipino uprising against Spain.

Aparently, the Philippines did not gain freedom from the Spaniards. By virtue of the Treaty of Paris, the Philippines, together with Puerto Rico, Cuba and Guam were ceded to the United States of America. Thus, we became an American colony right from there.

The rest is history.

J. R. was an intellectual. He pushed for reforms and freedom via the pen. He wrote the two novels ---Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo which exposed the evils of the Spaniards. He gave his advice to the other heroes---like Andres Bonifacio. Marcelo H. del Pilar and the others about how to defy Spain. Rizal's writings live on and continue to inspire the Filipino nation.

i agree with chelsea on rizal intellectual pushing reforms but not to liberate the filipinos from freedom or self governing , he is just want liberal reforms but still the pihl. will be under the spanish rule
not like andres bonifacio, whose idea is to total freedom to the filipino , but for the aguinaldo, he is the true color of our present political system , hunger for the power itself not caring for the people.
