With all the awareness in this day of pollution and damage to the earth and the emphasis on recycling and reusing and not wasting resources, why do retailers continue to use packaging regard for the environment? For example, why do some supermarkets sell bananas in a plastic bag? ...and why are crisps sold in bags that are often two sizes to big for their contents?

I'm with you on this one, only I'd like to go one step further and ask why the packing isn't more environmentally friendly. As consumers we often have no choice but to buy products as they are packaged and yet we are made to feel guilty about the amount of stuff in the landfill sites. Why does the government not enforce rigorous legislation about what foods can be packaged in?
For example, should we only buy milk in glass bottles? And butter in paper wrappings? (I cna't go down the route of how many trees that would take!)
And a further solution to our problems - in Cornwall houses are subsiding and big holes are developing because of the mines that run underground. Shouldn't we put our rubbish in there - that would make the whole area more stable!

Actually its not so much the retailers, but the manufacturers and wholesalers. I used to have a small post office and shop and my profit margin was that small I couldn't afford packaging. Mind you if you were to see how some customers and their unruly kids paw over the goods then leave them for the shopkeepers to clear up you might change your mind about some of the packaging, as it is in the most part I agree with you.

It's probably all about getting people to spend more money and, as the others wrote, to make the 'product' look more attractive than it is.
Retailers would also rather see more sales than worry about the poor environment.
As for crisps in large bags, maybe it's psychological - big bag must mean more crisps?

It's all about getting your attention. Oh, and fooling you into thinking that their product is worth the price. We pay for a lot of hot air and we're paying the price in terms of our environment and living conditions.
