Mucus is a slippery secretion of the lining of various membranes in the body (mucous membranes). It is a viscous colloid containing antiseptic enzymes (such as lysozyme) and immunoglobulins. Mucus is produced by goblet cells in the mucous membranes that cover the surfaces of the membranes. It is made up of mucins and inorganic salts suspended in water.

The cilia which normally sweep mucus away from the nostrils and towards the back of the throat (see respiratory epithelium) become sluggish or cease to function completely. This results in mucus running down the nose and dripping (a runny nose). Mucus also thickens in cold weather; when an individual comes in from the cold, the mucus thaws and begins to run again before the cilia begin to work again.

Believe me though when I tell ya, snot does NOT reproduce! There is no such thing as a 'male snot' and a 'female snot'...LOL! There is no 'snot nookie' going on inside your nose! At least, let's hope not ;-) Anyway, if you blew out a Mama Snot or a Daddy Snot, then went back 2 minutes later and blew out a Baby Snot, then I would think one of the parent snots would have been more snot than that of the Baby Snot, IMHO ;-)

Snot is really a product within your body that destroys germs, it comes out so quickly because you body is trying to get rid of said germs - heal quicker. Snot is not only contained to your nose however, though that is the most common outlet. As to where it comes from? I forget. XD
