This should start you off: In biological systems, many complex biochemical pathways are required to maintain life - intake of energy, conversion of energy and release of energy. At the relatively low body temperatures found in biology (approx 37 degrees celcius in humans) these reactions could not occur fast enough for life to continue. Remember chemical reactions are speeded up by increasing temperature, increasing surface area available to act and addition of a catalyst (among other things). Increasing temperature would kill us by denaturing the very proteins that compose us, and increasing the surface area would be impossible as chemical reactions would be needed to form the extra flesh and bigger molecules that would react. Catalysing the reaction is necessary. This means that some mechanism is needed that brings the reactants together in such an orientation that they do not need to rely on random collisions to meet and react. temperature would speed em up, but as was stated this would kill us. Enzymes are biological catalysts that have an affinity for either the reactants or the transitional state that they form prior to converting into the product. Without them there would be no life.

They create an alternate pathway for the reaction to progress , reduce the activation energy so that there are more effective collisions so that equilibrium is attained faster
