Ajanta (also Ajanta Caves) in Maharashtra, India are rock-cut architecture dating back to the second century BCE and containing paintings and sculpture considered to be masterpieces of both "Buddhist religious art"[1] and "universal pictorial art."[2] Though often called 'caves' they are man-made and thus in every respect architecture; they are located just outside the village of Ajinṭhā in Aurangabad District in the Indian state of Maharashtra
